Overview
The Controls Technician provides hands-on technical support for industrial control systems that enable safe, reliable, and efficient operation of automated distribution center equipment.
This role focuses on troubleshooting and maintaining PLC-, HMI-, and SCADA-controlled automation; industrial networks; sensors; drives; and control panels, partnering with Maintenance Technicians and Operations teams to restore uptime quickly and reduce repeat failures.
What You'll Do
- Troubleshoot and restore operation of PLC/HMI/SCADA-controlled equipment across automated material handling and packaging systems (conveyors, sortation, scanners, print/apply, scales, and related control cabinets)
- Use online diagnostics and field verification to isolate faults (I/O, sensors, safety devices, communications) and execute safe recovery actions to minimize downtime
- Diagnose electrical and controls failures involving sensors/photo-eyes, encoders, safety circuits, relays/contactors, power supplies, motor starters, and control wiring using schematics and test equipment
- Support VFDs/servo drives and motor control systems by troubleshooting faults, validating parameters/settings, and coordinating repairs or replacements
- Troubleshoot industrial communications and OT connectivity issues (device drops, addressing, network faults) and coordinate resolution with Controls Engineering and/or IT/OT as needed
- Execute controls preventive maintenance including control panel inspections, device health checks, cleaning/securement, and verification of alarms and interlocks
- Troubleshoot and support scan tunnels and vision systems including Datalogic, SICK, Cognex, Keyence, Zebra or similar
- Support troubleshooting of automation-to-WMS/WCS interfaces including communication, data flow, and system handoffs
- Utilize system diagnostics, alarms, and available data to support rapid fault isolation and recovery
What You'll Bring to the Table
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; technical certificate or associate degree preferred
- 2+ years of experience supporting industrial automation or controls systems
- Working knowledge of PLC systems with ability to navigate logic for troubleshooting
- Experience with HMI interfaces and alarm/fault diagnostics
- Experience troubleshooting motor controls and industrial electrical systems
- Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Experience troubleshooting industrial scanning systems, vision systems, or automated data capture technologies
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in automated distribution center or manufacturing environments
- Familiarity with Rockwell (Allen-Bradley) and/or Siemens platforms
- Experience supporting scan tunnels, barcode systems, or machine vision platforms
- Familiarity with WMS/WCS environments and interaction with controls systems
- Experience with SCADA or visualization systems
- CMMS experience and strong work order discipline
